Two new restaurants to open in downtown Bangor

Two new restaurants are coming to the Queen City, city officials said Tuesday.

Massimo’s Breads at 130 Hammond Street is slated to transform into Massimo’s Pizza Bar. Meanwhile the iconic Circular Building on Broad Street will become home to Evenrood’s, a new restaurant slated for the downstairs space there.

That’s right … Bangor’s restaurant scene got yet another nod from the city officials Monday evening when the city council approved liquor licenses for the two new eateries. A third new liquor license was also approved for an outpost of Hero’s Sport’s Grill at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course and the council renewed a fourth for downtown restaurants in what Councilor Gibran Graham called a “Liquor License Yahtzee.”

The liquor license for Olive Garden was the one renewed.

Graham said the requests confirmed what many Bangor residents have thought in recent years — nightlife, well life in general, is picking up in Bangor.

“I attribute it to a lot more people taking chances and risks that are good ideas, they are attracting more people downtown,” Graham said. “It’s not just the nightlife, it’s the apartments, more people are living downtown and they’re here looking to do more things in the evening, looking for entertainment … I think all of that is great.

The license approvals were fairly straightforward, although Graham said he asked councilors to double check with the residents living above the current Massimo’s Breads location to make sure they were aware of the changes. They were notified via public notice in the Bangor Daily News and none presented arguments for or against at Monday’s meeting.

No additional information was available Monday about what type of restaurant Evenrood’s will be or even if that will be the final name, however Graham said he was confident it will be a positive addition to the downtown restaurant scene.

“I’m sure they’ve leased the space to a business that is going to serve a particular niche and also add to the ambiance of the entire building,” Graham said.
