Krispy Kreme, the doughnut chain that rivals Dunkin’ Donuts in popularity in many parts of the country, announced back in February that it and a franchise partner were eyeing opening a few locations in Maine — which would be the only Krispy Kreme stories in New England north of Connecticut.
Now, according to Krispy Kreme franchisee Cort Mendez, the first Krispy Kreme store in Maine will be in Auburn, construction for which is presently underway and is expected to be completed later this fall.
Mendez said when he first visited Maine on a Krispy Kreme scouting mission over the winter that a Bangor store was at the top of his list, and that he likely would put another store in Portland or South Portland. Another, he said, is a little more uncertain, naming Augusta, Biddeford and Brunswick as possible sites. He’s also looking at a location in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire.
